Swine farrowing crates consistently provide higher weaning of pig percentages than other systems, higher stocking densities, and therefore higher gross margins per pig. Farrowing crate designs vary widely and serve several purposes including: safety for the pig worker by protecting the pig worker from sow aggression, ease of management for procedures such as clipping teeth, tailing, examining sow's udder, reducing pig mortality from crushing / disease, and economy of space in the hog farrowing room.
